Jakarta Games 2018 medals count: India record best-ever Asiad tally

JAKARTA: A Gold medal in the Men’s Light Fly (49kg) category in boxing delivered by Amit Panghal and another by the Men’s Bridge Team featuring Pranab Bardhan and Shibnath Dey Sarkar, took India’s medal tally at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang to 69 medals here Saturday.

Following Amit’s split decision win over Uzbekistan’s reigning Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov in the final, India’s medal tally reads – 15 Gold, 24 Silver and 30 Bronze.

With this tally, India have amassed the most medals ever at an Asian Games, surpassing the previous best of 65 medals won at the 2010 edition in Guangzhou, China. At the 2010 Asian Games, India had collected 14 Gold medals, 17 Silver and 34 Bronze medals.

Moments after Amit came out on tops against the Rio Gold medal winner, the Men’s Bridge Team featuring Pranab Bardhan and Shibnath Dey Sarkar kept the medal count ticking to take the Gold medals to 15 – matching India’s best ever Gold medal haul from the 1951 Games.

Later in the day, the women’s squash team had to settle for Silver against Hong Kong.

India ended the day on a high after adding another Bronze in hockey in the match against Pakistan, beating their arch rivals 2-1.
