KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has said the state is planning to roll out a sports policy so as to provide benefits to promising young talent.
“Our government has helped many of our sportspersons who brought honour for the state. We are looking to come up with a new policy to help sportspersons who have performed well and won medals. This will enhance their confidence and facilitate them in achieving goals in next big level,” IANS quotes Banerjee as having.
The state government had earlier declared a cash prize of Rs 1 million and a government job for India’s first-ever Asian Games Gold medal winner in heptathlon, Swapna Barman.
Barman has overcome several odds to achieve the special feat.
The chief minister plans felicitated the champion athlete in Darjeeling Monday and said that the government will be providing all the facilities she requires for success in future sporting events.
Earlier, Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory (ICF) had said that it will be provide the athlete customised shoes which will be designed by Nike since she faces a problem running with a normal pair as she has six toes.
