A CONTROVERSY HAS ERUPTED in Indian football after Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman accused the Argentina national football team, led by Lionel Messi, of “cheating” the state by failing to honour a commitment to play an exhibition match despite alleged financial arrangements.
The allegations have triggered sharp reactions across the sporting ecosystem, raising questions over international match agreements, financial transparency, and accountability in global football engagements.
The minister claimed that Kerala had gone to great lengths to organise a high-profile match featuring the reigning world champions. The state allegedly mobilised significant funds, estimated at around ₹250 crore, to host the event and discussions were seem to have been held with stakeholders, including the Argentina (AFA), and despite this, the team did not turn up after allegedly receiving payment. Abdurahiman further warned that the matter could lead to legal action and compensation claims, indicating the seriousness of the dispute.
The controversy marks a dramatic turnaround from what was initially projected as a landmark sporting event for Kerala. In late 2025, the minister publicly announced that Argentina would visit Kerala in March 2026 for an exhibition match. The plan generated massive excitement among fans, especially given Messi’s popularity in the state. The initiative was part of Kerala’s broader push to position itself as a global football destination
However, the plan gradually lost clarity when Argentina’s international schedule eventually showed no fixtures in India, with matches planned in other regions like China, Qatar, and Africa, and the proposed Kerala fixture ultimately collapsed without execution
Abdurahiman has alleged that Kerala may not be an isolated case and claimed Argentina had similarly failed commitments in multiple countries and suggested a pattern of accepting payments without fulfilling appearances
While these claims remain unverified independently, they have intensified the controversy and could invite global scrutiny.
