THE LANKA PREMIER LEAGUE will introduce the impact substitute rule in its 2026 edition, alongside a new regulation requiring every team to have at least one Under-23 player in the playing XI at all times, including after an impact substitute is used.
The new rules influenced squad-building strategies during the LPL 2026 draft, with franchises balancing experienced players and young talent while maintaining flexibility for impact substitutions. Teams also faced a limited pool of eligible Under-23 players, as several Sri Lankan Under-19 cricketers were unavailable due to a tour of India.
The tournament will begin on July 17 with defending champions Jaffna Kings taking on Galle Marvels in a rematch of the 2024 final. It was also confirmed that Pathum Nissanka and Matheesha Pathirana are currently managing injuries ahead of the season.
