Maharashtra’s ‘Mission Shakti’ aims to produce intl sports champions

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government will be launching a new programme called ‘Mission Shakti’, that will train athletes for national and international competitions such as the Olympics, Press Trust of India reports.

The state’s forest minister, Sudhir Mungantiwar, confirmed that the wheels are already in motion when it comes to constructing sports complexes in areas namely Chimur, Pombhurna, Ballarpur and Mool as they have been given high priority. The Ballarpur Sports Complex will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25 this year. The minister laid out plans of its functioning as well in brief.
 
“After the success of ‘Mission Shaurya’, where tribal students from Chandrapur scaled Mount Everest, ‘Mission Shakti’ programme is being implemented by the state government,” Mungantiwar was quoted as saying to PTI.

“In order to enable athletes to participate in national and international competitions, including the 2024 Olympics, services of qualified sports coaches, having experience of international competitions, will be made available.

“Also, services of sports coaches, who have completed training course offered by the National Institute of Sports will be sought,” Mungantiwar concluded. 

In order to increase the levels of training, besides coaches, former champions and experts in sports will also be invited as guests on occasion to guide and motivate the students.
