LONDON: Fugitive Indian businessman Vijay Mallya announced his resignation on Thursday as the director of Sahara Force India, but will continue to serve in the capacity of a shareholder and the team principal of the Formula 1 team.
Mallya is facing legal issues in the United Kingdom, which is reportedly one of the reasons behind the decision.
He bought the team, previously known as Spyker in 2007 in partnership with Sahara India’s Subrata Roy and the Mol family. The team was then renamed ‘Force India’ and has gone from strength to strength, peaking with fourth place in the constructors’ championship in each of the last two seasons.
It is expected that his son Siddharth Mallya would be his replacement for the director’s position as a formal announcement on the same is yet to be made.
Force India are currently sixth in the constructors’ championship on 26 points, with Sergio Perez’s podium in Azerbaijan the team’s 2018 highlight so far.
