Mary Kom’s 6th World C’ship win; Manipur mulls honour

NEW DELHI: Manipur is awaiting the arrival of India’s boxing queen MC Mary Kom from the capital, where she scripted a world record by becoming the first woman boxer to win six Gold medals at the Boxing World Championships, to honour her in a big way.

Making this announcement in Imphal on Sunday, Manipur chief minister N Biren said: “All sections of people in the country are proud of Kom, who is from Manipur. The government is ready to accord her the highest honour to this world famous boxer.”

He said that the cabinet will soon decide what kind of title will be given to Mary.

Biren said: “It (honour) may be ‘Queen of Manipur’ or ‘Mother of Manipur’ or anything befitting her international status. We are waiting for her arrival. We shall receive her in a befitting manner with the title.”

Official sources told IANS that the proposed cabinet meeting may decide the amount which will be given to the 35-year-old boxer.

Mary Kom is one of the biggest names of the noble art after seeing her hand raised in all international major boxing events and inspiring millions of young people around the world in and out of the ring. 

But the Light Fly (48 kg) Indian superstar is not done yet as she showed in winning her sixth World Championships title in incredible fashion. With this victory, Kom has finally tied with Cuba’s legendary Felix Savon as the boxer with the most AIBA world titles.
