MOUNTAIN DEW has launched a gaming-led campaign in the Philippines that challenges players to attempt a near-impossible task: playing their favourite PC games without the “D”, “E” and “W” keys.
The idea draws on a unique insight from the country’s gaming culture. Around 97% of internet users in the Philippines play video games with PC gaming forming a core part of that ecosystem. Among the most commonly used keyboard controls in many PC titles are the keys “D”, “E”, “W”, “A”, “S” and “F”. Coincidentally, three of those letters spell “DEW”, the name by which Filipino gamers commonly refer to the beverage.
Developed in collaboration with BBDO Guerrero, the campaign positions the brand as an integral part of gaming culture, playfully suggesting that the drink is not just something that fuels gamers but something embedded in the game itself.
To bring the concept to life, Mountain Dew invited leading PC game streamers to take part in a live challenge using customised keyboards with the “D”, “E” and “W” keys removed. Popular creators including Alodia Gosiengfiao, DocZ Gaming, Cherizawa, KingFB, AmaraTV and Buunja attempted to play their usual titles live on stream, with predictably chaotic and entertaining results.
Within the first two weeks of launch, the livestreams generated more than 44.3 million views across platforms, with engagement continuing as the campaign runs through the end of March.
The initiative also encouraged broader community participation. During the livestreams, viewers were invited to replicate the challenge at home by disabling the “D”, “E” and “W” keys on their keyboards and sharing their attempts on TikTok, Facebook Reels or Instagram Reels using the hashtag #PlayNoDew, while tagging participating creators. Selected participants received gaming headsets, keyboards, exclusive Mountain Dew jackets and other merchandise.
As the campaign’s climax, Mountain Dew hosted a live competition on 27 February featuring professional and amateur gamers. The match pitted Team PLAY THE DEW, made up of selected amateurs and content creators playing with full keyboards, against Team NO DEW, comprising five members from Team NAOS, an internationally competing esports team, who had to play without the “D-E-W” keys.
The event reached full venue capacity and attracted thousands of viewers from the local gaming community who watched the live showdown.
Following strong online engagement and the live event, the brand will also extend the activation offline through select gaming cafés across the Philippines. Players will be able to try the challenge themselves at Kadiliman Café in Taft and España, TNC Café in Cebu City, and NCGC Matina in Davao City.
PepsiCo Philippines Beverages marketing director Nicole Villarojo said, “Gaming is one of the fastest-growing passion spaces in the Philippines, and it demands brands that understand the culture. For Mountain Dew, this campaign was about moving beyond visibility, and into participation through authentic gaming insights and behavior. Play No Dew reflects our bigger ambition to move beyond being a supporter of gaming, become an indispensable part of the experience and create moments that players genuinely want to be part of.”
BBDO Guerrero creative chairman David Guerrero added, “Often, brands are trying to add something on to a game. But with this campaign we were able to make an impact by taking something away. Because, as all PC gamers know, you can’t win without the D, E, and W keys. Which is the strongest proof yet that when there’s no Dew, it’s no contest.”
