ZURICH: UEFA confirmed on Friday that it has received bid dossiers from nine countries in total to host the final matches of club competitions in 2021.
Importantly, for the Champions League final, Germany’s Munich and Russia’s St. Petersburg will go head-to-head as the winner will be declared by UEFA in September this year.
Germany had made its intentions clear to make this move following its win over Turkey for the hosting rights of the Euro 2024 championships last year. However, it could find things tougher on this occasion with St. Petersburg having hosted many FIFA World Cup 2018 matches with tremendous success.
For the Europa League, Spain has put its city Sevilla to be up against Georgia’s Tblilisi. It bears noting that Madrid will be hosting the 2019 UEFA Champions League final.
Interestingly, the Super Cup competition has attracted more bidders with Belarus, Finland, Ukraine and Northern Ireland to battle it out. On the other hand, it is only Sweden which has submitted a bid to host the UEFA Women’s Champions League final that year.
The UEFA Executive Committee will select the successful host associations for the finals of the Europa League, Women’s Champions League and Super Cup 2021 on 29 May this year.
UEFA also took the opportunity to declare the bidding process for the 2022 and 2023 UEFA Champions League finals open, culminating with the appointment of the respective hosts also in September 2019.
The deadline for UEFA member associations to confirm their intention to submit a bid for the above-mentioned finals (2022 and 2023) is 22 March 2019.
