Octagon names digital head for global media rights practice

STAMFORD, CT: Sports marketing agency Octagon has appointed former MP & Silva executive William Mao to its Global Media Rights Consulting group.

Mao will report to Octagon Media Rights Consulting SVP and lead Daniel Cohen – who also previously worked for MP & Silva – and will be based in the agency’s New York office.

Launched earlier this year, Octagon’s media rights practice provides strategic consultation to major domestic and international rights holders, broadcasters, digital distribution platforms and the sports investment community to help clients determine the value of their content and optimize distribution opportunities across the cross-platform media landscape and shifting fan consumption patterns.

“This is an exciting hire for Octagon. William offers our media consulting clients a fresh perspective on the landscape given his rich, global experiences working across sports media rights at YouTube Sports and MP & Silva,” said Daniel Cohen, SVP Octagon Media Rights Consulting. “In particular, Williams’s expertise in the digital and social media space will provide our clients a clear strategy on how to maximize the value of their content and platforms as they look toward the future.”

Mao previously served as head of College Sports for YouTube, where he established digital video partnerships with the NCAA and major college conferences including the Pac-12 and ACC. Mao was also VP Digital for MP & Silva, helping to establish the agency’s North American presence.
