NEW DELHI: Anshuman Gaekwad was on Sunday elected the male representative of the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA), to the apex council of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Former India opener Gaekwad (471 votes) beat his one-time national teammate Azad (381) by 90 votes in the first ICA elections held between October 10 and October 13, PTI reports.
About the only surprise in the results is not that Gaekwad won, but that Azad got as many votes as he did. Azad has long been a trenchent critic of Indian cricket establishment.
What was no surprise was the election unapposed of former India batsman Ashok Malhotra as ICA president.
For the frecord, the ICA is BCCI’s idea of a players’ representative body – one where only retired cricketers are allowed entry.
Coming back to the elections, former India captain Shantha Rangaswamy was elected as ICA’s female representative to the BCCI apex council, while former India international Surinder Khanna was elected as the ICA representative to the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Meanwhile, former Gujarat pacer Hitesh Majumdar was elected ICA secretary while former Tamil Nadu player V Krishnaswamy was elected as its treasurer, the newswire further reports.
Former Test batsman Yajurvindra Singh, who has had a long association with leading software company TCS as a marketing and sports consultant, and former India women’s team wicketkeeper Rajesh Nayyar, were elected as member representatives.
