Sky Sports, the incumbent rights holder in the UK for the TATA Indian Premier League in the previous three-year cycle (ending 2022), has agreed a deal to broadcast live the 2023 edition of world cricket’s richest annual tournament.
The tournament begins on Friday March 31 as defending champions Gujarat Titans face four-time winners Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Bryan Henderson, director of Cricket & NFL, Sky Sports, said: “The IPL sees the best players from across the world face off in front of a fanatical local audience in search of glory – resulting in some of the most explosive cricket around.
“We’re excited to add even more live action to a busy cricketing summer that features both men’s and women’s Ashes series, The Vitality Blast and The Hundred, as well as a number of international series for both England’s men’s and women’s teams.”
Cricket fans were able to take more action from India from this weekend as the inaugural Women’s Premier League came to an end Sunday with the final telecast live on Sky Sports Cricket.
It bears noting that it was earlier reported by UK’s Daily Mail that leading European digital sports platform DAZN had acquired media rights for the IPL in the UK market for the next five years.
As per earlier UK media reports, Sky had decided to let go the IPL rights as a step in centring their focus around English domestic cricket.
