Vizzy, Rohinton Baria tournaments likely to get a boost

NEW DELHI: If all goes well, at the Captains’ Conclave to be held here soon, the university cricket tournaments, which are lagging in visibility now, could get a big boost.

The BCCI is thinking about ways to bring back the glory to varsity cricket which was a big thing few decades ago. With both the Rohinton Baria Trophy, an inter-college competition, and the Vizzy Trophy, the inter-zonal university cricket tournament, having lost its lustre, the Board will be discussing ways to bring back its popularity, an official told The Hindu newspaper.

The report said that the effort would be to “glamourise” the tournaments and even have live telecast of the finals fo the Vizzy Trophy.

Some of India’s celebrated cricketers such as Ajit Wadekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Bishan Singh Bedi, Dilip Vengsarkar and Kapil Dev came to the fore after performing well in these two tournaments, the report added.
