MUMBAI: India’s loss to New Zealand Wednesday in the semifinal of the 2019 Cricket World Cup saw Star India’s OTT platform Hotstar set new records in the number of concurrent viewers tuning in.
Not surprisingly, the peak of 25.3 million concurrent viewers was achieved when Ravindra Jadeja was at the crease, reviving hopes that India might pull off a miracle inwhat till then looked a lost cause. Concurrent viewers in the game went up by over 10 million within the span of an hour, The News Minute reports.
Jadeja brought India back into the match with his aggressive strokeplay and stitched together a 116-run partnership with MS Dhoni. But after Jadeja got out, soon followed by MS Dhoni who got run out, the numbers fell drastically.
The record prior to this for an ODI match was 15.6 million concurrent viewers, achieved earlier in the tournament when India thrashed arch enemy Pakistan.
The World Cup is being streamed in six languages on Hotstar – English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
