LONDON: England football’s governing body, The Football Association (FA) submitted on Wednesday its official bid to stage the UEFA Women’s Euro 2021 finals in the country. UEFA’s Executive Committee will announce the winner on 3 December 2018.
The development comes week after the association announced an extension of their partnership with McDonald’s for the next five years in developing women’s football especially across grassroots levels.
Should it win the bid, FA’s plan is for the Wembley Stadium to host the finale of the competition a year after it would host the Men’s Euro final in 2020.
The FA is buoyed by the England women’s team having a successful Euro 2017 campaign in the Netherlands, which saw them reach the semi-finals and generating a record peak audience of four million TV viewers in the UK.
The bid has received the full support of the UK Government and proposes a country-wide spread of host cities and stadia of varying capacities such as –
Brighton & Hove – AMEX Stadium
London – Wembley Stadium connected by EE and Brentford Community Stadium
Milton Keynes – Stadium MK
Manchester – Manchester City Academy Stadium
Nottingham – Meadow Lane
Peterborough – ABAX Stadium
Rotherham – AESSEAL New York Stadium
Sheffield – Bramall Lane
Martin Glenn, CEO of FA said: “Our bid to host UEFA Women’s Euro 2021 reflects our strong commitment to supporting and growing women’s and girls’ football in England.
“We have invested heavily in the women’s game in recent years and the opportunity to bring the tournament to England would represent a landmark moment for women’s football in this country.
