MUMBAI: The success of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be paramount for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) going forward as its earnings from this two-month tournament is expected to contribute nearly 95 per cent of its profits from the coming year, a report in The Times of India indicates.
According to the report, the total earnings for BCCI is likely to rise to Rs 21.42 billion, which includes Rs 20.17 billion from just the IPL. The remaining Rs 1.25 billion will come from the international and domestic matches in which the Indian team will take part.
While the IPL contributes around Rs 6.7 billion currently, the huge spike in profits somes from the huge money that Star India has committed for the media rights for five years. The deal worth Rs 163.47 billion, apart from boosting BCCI’s revenues will also provide handsome returns for the eight franchises.
The BCCI’s expenditure is likely to be in the range of Rs 34.14 billion while expenditure will be Rs 12.72 billion, the report added.
