MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to form a committee to look into compensating Indian domestic cricketers for loss of income suffered in the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The decision was taken Sunday at the BCCI’s 8th apex council meeting (emergent meeting).
A statement issued by the BCCI on the matter after the meeting reads: “The apex council has decided to form a committee to look into the issue of compensation for Indian domestic cricketers for domestic season 2020 and 2021. The apex council has mandated the office bearers of BCCI to form the committee and find a suitable compensatory mechanism for domestic cricketers, at the earliest possible.”
As per Cricbuzz, an active domestic cricketer earns Rs 2 million a year on average.
The cricket website further reports that a 10-member committee will look into the compensation package. The committee will include four office bearers and one representative from each of the six zones – North, West, South, East, Central and North East.
There has been widespread concern regarding the lack of financial support for the domestic cricketers, who have remained inactive since March last year, when the nationwide lockdown was first clamped. Since then, only a couple of white ball tournaments were played but the premier domestic tournament – Ranji Trophy – has not been conducted because of travel and other restrictions. Also age-group tournaments have also not been held.
