CHENNAI: The sixth edition of the Open National Race Walking Championship, which is set to take place in the city this weekend, has received roughly 200 registrations in total, with some being from countries such as Malaysia, Chinese Taipei and Portugal.
Press Trust of India reports that there is enough international interest in the event despite a lack of participation from other Asian nations. It will serve as a launchpad for selection of Indian athletes in the World Championships and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
In the short-term, the tournament is significant for participants interested in the Asian Race Walking Championship in Japan starting 17 March.
Athletics Federation of India secretary CK Valson told PTI that today, the 20 km walk for men (elite and Group B) and women would be held. Come Sunday and the 50 km event for men and 10 km race for boys and girls will take place.
