NEWLY-APPONTED New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief executive Geoff Allott has declared that India will play a central and defining role in the future of global cricket, underlining the country’s unmatched commercial, structural, and competitive influence on the sport.
Allott told First Up. that in his opinion India is “where the focus will be for the world in the next decade or five. Cricket in India provides a massive opportunity, not only for global cricket, but for New Zealand Cricket as well.” The remarks come at a time when global cricket is undergoing rapid transformation, with franchise leagues, media rights, and financial disparities reshaping the balance of power.
Geoff Allott, a former New Zealand international fast bowler, was appointed NZC CEO in April 2026 and tkes charge from July 1. He brings extensive governance experience, having previously served as NZC board director for eight years and holding roles in cricket administration and player associations. He played international cricket between 1996–2000, including starring in the 1999 World Cup.
Allott’s comments signal an acceptance among smaller boards that cricket’s future growth will be heavily tied to India’s economic strength and market expansion.
