NGO ADAPT to support disability category at Mumbai Marathon

MUMBAI: The Champions with Disability category at the Tata Mumbai Marathon in January 2018 will be supported by ADAPT, in the capacity as official provider.

The category which started in 2005 as the Wheelchair Event, was open only to individuals on a wheelchair. Over the years, the category has expanded to include individuals with all kinds of disabilities, not restricted only to wheelchair participants. The category was rechristened as ‘Champions with Disability’ in 2015, and is now open for individuals with physical/locomotor disability, intellectual impairment, visual impairment, hearing impairment and orthopaedic or neurological disorders.

Organisers Procam International have associated with ADAPT, The Spastic Society of India to create the necessary stir and push, by further engaging the community to come ahead and participate.

ADAPT CEO Malini Chib said, "The Spastic Society of India now known as ADAPT (Able Disabled All People Together) was started by Padmashree, Dr Mithu Alur in 1972 . Since then it has served the country for 44 years in the field of disability. Today, ADAPT is one of the largest NGO’s dealing with disability in India; from a little school it has evolved into a movement by and for disabled people. At the TATA Mumbai Marathon, Adapt will network with NGO’s and other institutions working with people with disabilities and assist them to be a part of this unique experience of running. We are sure that more NGO’s and individuals will be interested in coming together at this mega event of inclusion.”

With our partner’s suppor,t we will showcase the determination and spirit of the specially-abled persons to cross the finish line together, ADAPT’s work is an important step and we have got a long journey ahead.”
