CHENNAI: The 17th HCL International bridge championship, scheduled to be held here from August 5 to 10, will introduce a new event - Team of Four Bronze - for relatively new players.

The championship, with Team of Four Gold, Team of Four Silver events, apart from Open pairs event, MP Pairs Strata-II, IMP Pairs event, and IMP Pairs Strata-II, played in the Swiss league at the initial stage and knockout thereafter, will offer a total prize purse of Rs 18 million, The Hindu reports.

More than 185 teams representing 15 countries have registered. The event has been consistently held over the years, thanks to the patronage of Ms Kiran Nadar, director of HCL Corporation, who herself is a renowned international player.

Ms Nadar was part of the team that won the fifth Commonwealth Nations bridge championship and the Bronze in the Asian Games last year.

“The HCL bridge is our flagship initiative in sports and I have seen it grow, in terms of scale, participation, prestige and competitiveness. Like previous years, the best teams from top bridge playing nations like US, Israel and Australia will join us in the National Capital,” said Ms Nadar told the daily.
