MUMBAI: Legendary badminton player Nandu Natekar, the first Indian to win an international title in 1956, died in Pune on Wednesday.

The 88-year-old, who won over 100 national and international titles in his career, was suffering from age-related ailments, PTI reports.

He is survived by his son Gaurav and two daughters.

“He passed away peacefully at home and we were all with him and he has been ailing for the last three months and he passed away peacefully,” Gaurav told PTI.

MUMBAI: A year's wait is finally coming to an end as Japan gets ready to host the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The upcoming Olympics are scheduled to be held in the Japanese capital from July 23 to August 8. A total of around 11,000 athletes from 206 countries are expected to participate in 33 sports in Tokyo Olympics 2021.

KUALA LUMPUR: BWF confirmed on Wednesday that Suzhou, China has been awarded the hosting rights of the TotalEnergies BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2023. Suzhou was due to host the championships in 2021, but with BWF unable to stage any tournaments in China this year, the event was reallocated to Vantaa in Finland.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed Friday that no further tournaments will be played inside the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualifying window. As such, while the qualification period officially closes 15 June as per the Revised Tokyo 2020 Qualification System, the current Race To Tokyo rankings list will not change.

NEW DELHI: Badminton Association of India president Himanta Biswa Sarma was on Saturday elected to the BWF council for the period 2021-25. Sarma, who is also the vice president of Badminton Asia, got 236 votes as the 20 council members were elected from 31 contestants at the virtual AGM and council election.
