Michael Jordan’s 'Last Dance' sneakers fetch record $2.2m at auction

A pair of sneakers that were worn by basketball icon Michael Jordan was sold for $2.2 million (around €2 million) on Tuesday in New York, becoming the most expensive worn sports footwear in history, auction house Sotheby's declared.

The sneakers broke the previous record set by a pair of Air Jordans that were sold for $1.5 million in 2021.

The auctioned shoes were a pair of the Air Jordan 13 sneakers that the basketball great wore during the 1998 NBA Finals, known as “The Last Dance”.

NEW YORK: “The Last Dance” finished strong for its finale, with episodes 9 & 10 averaging 5.6 million viewers across ESPN and ESPN2. Episode 9 (9-10 p.m.) averaged 5.9 million viewers, up 10% from last Sunday, becoming the third most watched episode of the series, trailing the record-breaking audiences of episodes 1 and 3.

Michael Jordan docu series 'The Last Dance' premieres 20 April
NEW YORK: “The Last Dance”, the 10-part documentary series on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls’ quest for a sixth NBA Championship in 1998, will debut on Netflix beginning Monday, 20 April with two new episodes weekly.  The series will also be available in the US on ESPN.
