Poland’s sports minister to be next WADA president

MONTREAL, Canada: Poland’s Sport and Tourism Minister Witold Banka is set to become the next president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after a vote on Tuesday left him as the only remaining candidate.

WADA’s executive committee and foundation board declared Banka - a WADA executive committee member and former 400m sprinter - as their preferred candidate for the body's presidentship when Craig Reedie steps down at the end of 2019.

Banka will be formally elected president by the board at the World Conference on Doping in Sport 2019, which takes place in Katowice, Poland, from 5-7 November, and will assume the role for a three-year term from 1 January 2020.

“This is an important moment for Poland. Being chosen is a great honour, but also a great responsibility,” Banka told Polish news channel TVP Info.
