MUMBAI: India’s growing reputation as a potential racquet sports hub is all set to get a massive boost with the launch of the World Pickleball League (WPBL), the first-ever professional pickleball league, envisaged by Natekar Sports and Gaming (NSG) and Sony Entertainment Talent Ventures India (SETVI).

NSG, is a company promoted by ‘former Davis Cup star and Arjuna Awardee Gaurav Natekar and his wife, ‘Arati Ponnappa Natekar, also a former India #1 in Tennis. SETVI is a joint venture between Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment.

MUMBAI: Rooter, the Indian live sports social engagement startup has secured a Rs45 million investment in its pre-Series A round of fund raising from a consortium of investors called Venture Catalysts which included the likes of Aviva Life Insurance’s chief customer marketing and digital officer, Anjali Malhotra, Economic Times reports.

MUMBAI: Smaaash Entertainment Private Limited, the Indian virtual sports and entertainment firm controlled by serial entrepreneur Shripal Morakhia, is planning to raise anywhere between $25 million (Rs 1.75 billion) and $30 million (Rs. 2.1 billion approx) from investors in the USA, Economic Times reports.

LONDON: National tennis federations have voted overwhelmingly in favour of "transformational" proposals to revamp the Davis Cup and turn it into a season-ending 18-team event. A two-thirds majority among the 140 nations was needed at the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) annual general meeting.

TOKYO: Japanese Minister Shunichi Suzuki has claimed that hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020 in the country would cost 1.35 trillion Japanese Yen ($121.7 billion), Japan Times reports. The city of Tokyo and the Organizing Committee of the Games will be contributing 600 billion Yen ($54 billion) each while the national government will be granting a subsidy of 150 billion Yen ($1.35 billion).

LONDON: Private equity firm Apax Partners LLP Monday announced a definitive agreement to acquire sports data technology company Genius Sports Group.  The stake was acquired from Genius Sports' founders, management, funds advised by Three Hills Capital Partners and other minority shareholders. The transaction is expected to close in Q3 2018. Financial terms were not disclosed.

LOS ANGELES: Global eSports organization Immortals announced Tuesday that Meg Whitman, former CEO of Hewlett Packard and eBay, made a significant investment in the company, her first in eSports, and had been named to Immortals’ board of directors.  Neither the quantum of investment, nor the amount of stake Whitman was being offered, were disclosed.
